Autodesk Inventor View 11

The version 11 compatible Inventor View program is now freely available for download from the Autodesk web site. Inventor View allows viewing of the native Inventor 11 format files. We would still recommend producing dwfs and using dwf viewer in preference to viewing native Inventor files which are much larger. However Autodesk give you the full choice of viewing options, native or lightweight, so you can choose the option that best suits your situation.

Inventor View 11 can be downloaded from here.

Inventor Large Assembly Capacity & x64 Computers - Frequently Asked Questions

Inventor 11 delivers easy-to-use and flexible large assembly management tools that provide complete control over how much data is loaded into memory during the design session. Combine that with new x64 computers that offer increased performance and expanded memory capacity and you have a winning combination. The key to efficient use of new x64 computers is memory management tools that let the user control how much data is loaded into memory. Autodesk Inventor® 11 software provides such tools. This FAQ document will help you understand Autodesk's approach to these new x64 computers. From the outset, Autodesk Inventor was designed to provide the scalability required to create very large assemblies regardless of the computer architecture. Inventor Installation Error 1406

This has been published in the last 2 technical bulletins but this problem is still tripping some of you up.
You try to install Inventor you receive the following error message:

Error 1406. Could not write value to key SoftwareClassesCLSID{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}Programmable. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

This error happens if you have Macromedia Flash Player 8a installed. This version of Flash Player is newer than the version that is installed when you install Autodesk Inventor. You will need to uninstall Macromedia flash player before retrying the Inventor installation.
To uninstall macromedia player run C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\UninstFl.exe. Also check if Macromedia is in the list of installed software in the add/remove programs from control panel. If it is also remove it from there before re-attempting the installation.

Preset standard for Design Accelerator

The preset standard for Design Accelerator in Inventor 11 can be modified by modifying the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion11.0\DesignAccelerator\UniTools\ LastStandard

Change the value for "LastStandard" to "ANS" for ANSI, "DIN" for DIN, "ISO" for ISO.

Inventor 11 Content Center crash after SP1 is installed

After SP1 for Inventor 11 is installed on all clients you may encounter a problem where the content center crashes when you insert certain parts, however other parts work fine. This occurs when the folders "Design Data" and "Catalog" are stored on a server for central use. Installing SP1 will not update them. To make sure these files will also be updated, copy these folders back to the local machine, install SP1 and then copy these folders back to the server.

 Miscellaneous Tips

License Promotion

There are many questions and uncertainty about the new cascading network license functionality. In a mixed product environment cascading licenses allow for a higher product level license to be obtained if the applicable lowest level licenses are all in use. The diagram below shows the license search matrix. For example when starting AutoCAD Mechanical an available AutoCAD Mechanical license is first searched for. If one is unavailable a search is made for an available Inventor Series License. If this is unavailable the next level license is attempted to be located, Inventor Professional.

But what happens if AutoCAD Mechanical is running on a machine using an AutoCAD Mechanical License and Inventor Series or Professional is started on the same machine? An Inventor license will then be required so will 2 licenses be tied up on one machine rather than a single Inventor Series license. The answer is no. When using a network license after a couple of minutes of running two cascading license applications next to each other, the cheapest application upgrades its license to the more expensive application. For example: Start AutoCAD Mechanical. It will use a 51900AMECH_PP_2007_0F license.
Then also start Inventor Professional. It will use a 51400INVPRO_11_0F license, so at that point, two licenses are in use.
A couple of minutes later AutoCAD Mechanical releases its license and upgrades to a 51400INVPRO_11_0F license.
Now only a single license is in use (because using two licenses of the same product on the same machine only counts a single license).
If you exit Inventor Professional first, AutoCAD Mechanical does not demote back to its original license!
Note: an application can upgrade its license only once, so if you first run AutoCAD Mechanical, then run Inventor Series, AutoCAD Mechanical will upgrade to an Inventor Series license. If you then also start Inventor Professional, AutoCAD Mechanical will keep using an Inventor Series license and Inventor Series will upgrade to an Inventor Professional license.

 AutoCAD Tips

Slow Response from @ Key

You may notice that when you press the @ symbol on the keyboard, the symbol was not immediately displayed on the command line. The symbol doesn't appear until the SHIFT key is released and sometimes results in incorrect keyboard entries being carried out. This issue can occur when Dynamic Input has been disabled.
To work around the problem you can enable Dynamic Input by clicking DYN on the status bar, or by pressing F12. Alternatively you can disable Temporary Overrides by setting the TEMPOVERRIDES variable to 0.
If these workarounds are not implemented, the @ symbol will appear on the command line once the SHIFT key has been released. You can then resume normal keyboard entry.

AutoCAD 2007 Graphics Hardware Compatibility List

Inventor users will be familiar with the high level graphics card requirement to correctly run Inventor. Autodesk have a card certification list that shows the certified cards and, just as importantly, the graphics driver version required for best operation.
With the introduction of AutoCAD 2007, and its higher level graphics requirement, Autodesk have now introduced a graphics compatibility list for AutoCAD. AutoCAD users should check this list to ensure they are running suitable hardware and driver combination for stable operation of the latest AutoCAD version.

You can find the AutoCAD graphics compatibility list here.

 Vault Tips

How To upgrade from Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Edition to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express for Autodesk Vault 5

MSDE (the version of the SQL database behind Vault server) has a database limit of 2GB. When a vault database reaches this size it will immediately prevent any additional changes to be carried out preventing you adding or modifying your vaulted data. In Vault 4 the only solution was to upgrade to a full version of SQL Server 2000 which also required a Windows server operating system. Vault 5 gives us more options to overcome this problem as SQL server 2005 is now supported. We can upgrade to SQL server 2005 express edition which is the free version next generation of MSDE. SQL Server 2005 express has a 4GB database limit, double the MSDE 2GB limit. SQL Server 2005 Express is on the Inventor DVD and has a special setup wrapper that carries out all necessary changes to upgrade your existing MSDE installation. The upgrade can be carried out as follows:

  1. Perform (and test) a backup from Vault Manager of your current vaults.
  2. Insert your Inventor 11 DVD in to the server.
  3. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the bin\acadfeui\upgradeSQL2005 directory on the DVD
  4. Run the setup.exe file to carry out the upgrade.

If you should subsequently reach the 4GB limit of 2005 Express you will need to upgrade to one of the purchasable SQL 2005 licenses. Vault 5 supports SQL 2005 workgroup edition, which, as well as being about half the price of SQL Standard edition, will run on Windows XP as Express edition also does. If you have 10 or less users accessing vault you can utilise a windows XP machine as your vault server which is significantly cheaper than Windows 2003 server.

 Tea Break

With the world cup in full swing you may be in need of some light relief from the endless match debating. This months link is to a special world cup version of a football favourite, Football 365's look-alikes.
We've all seen David Hasselhoff masquerading as the Germany goalkeeper but have a look here for some not so obvious twins.
As well as look-alikes there's also the added bonus of the World Cups Worst Haircuts and the Ugliest footballers poll.
